How weekly take-home pay is calculated
We convert your salary to an annual figure, run it through the standard Income Tax, National Insurance and student loan calculations, then divide the result by 52 to get a weekly figure. Paid monthly instead? Try our Monthly Salary Calculator, or use the full Take-Home Pay Calculator for four-weekly and two-weekly pay.
Frequently asked questions
How is weekly pay taxed differently from monthly pay?
Weekly-paid employees usually get a cumulative tax calculation that spreads the annual Personal Allowance across 52 weeks (about £242 a week tax-free), rather than 12 months. The overall annual tax is the same either way.
I work variable hours each week — how do I use this calculator?
Enter your typical or average annual earnings and keep the pay frequency set to "Per year" to see an average weekly figure. For pay based on an hourly rate and hours worked, try our Hourly Wage Calculator instead.
Does this account for four-weekly pay?
Not directly on this page — four-weekly pay (13 periods a year) is different from weekly pay (52 periods a year). Use our full Take-Home Pay Calculator, which supports four-weekly and two-weekly pay frequencies.
