How student loan repayments are calculated

Each plan has its own annual income threshold. Once your income goes above that threshold, you repay a fixed percentage (9% for Plans 1, 2, 4 and 5, or 6% for the Postgraduate Loan) of everything you earn above it — not a percentage of your whole salary.

Frequently asked questions

Which student loan plan am I on?

It depends on where and when you started your course. English and Welsh students who started before 2012 are usually on Plan 1; most who started 2012–2023 are on Plan 2; new English students from 2023 onward are on Plan 5. Scottish students are usually on Plan 4. Postgraduate Master's and Doctoral loans use a separate Postgraduate Loan plan. Check your account on the Student Loans Company website if you're unsure.

Do I pay off my student loan through my salary automatically?

If you're employed, your employer deducts student loan repayments automatically through PAYE once your income for the pay period is above the relevant threshold, in the same way Income Tax and National Insurance are deducted.

What happens if I have more than one student loan plan?

If you have loans on more than one plan type, repayments are calculated slightly differently to avoid overpaying — this calculator estimates repayments for a single selected plan at a time.
