How this salary calculator works
We convert whatever you enter into an annual gross salary, then run it through the same Income Tax, National Insurance and student loan calculations used across this site, so figures stay consistent whichever calculator you use. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between gross and net salary?
Gross salary is what you earn before any deductions. Net salary, also called take-home pay, is what's left after Income Tax, National Insurance and any student loan repayments have been taken off.
How is UK salary tax calculated?
Income Tax is charged on your salary above your tax-free Personal Allowance (£12,570 for most people), using banded rates that increase as your income rises. National Insurance is calculated separately on your gross pay above the Primary Threshold.
Does this calculator work for part-time salaries?
Yes. Enter your actual annual salary, or switch the pay frequency to monthly or weekly, and the calculator applies the same tax-free allowance and bands as a full-time salary — there's no separate part-time tax rate.
